A stunning second half strike from Inverness CT captain Sean Welsh sealed all three points for ICT as they went to the top of the Cinch Scottish Championship tonight after beating Kilmarnock 1-0 at the Caledonian Stadium.
Head Coach Billy Dodds made seven changes from the side which was beaten on penalties by Raith Rovers in the SPFL Trust Trophy.
As for the visitors, client Scott Robinson returned to the line up as Tommy Wright looked to keep his side at the summit of the league table.
The home side started the strongest and Roddy McGregor went close and after being found by teammate Billy McKay, who sent his effort behind for a Thistle corner. Kilmarnock were cautious in their approach but struggled to create any clear-cut chances in the early stages.
After 29 minutes, Billy McKay again won the ball in midfield with some good pressing. After finding Sean Welsh who was advancing into the box, the club captain was dispossessed but the clearance went only as far as Shane Sutherland with his effort inches away from nestling in the top corner.
Kilmarnock’s best chance of the game came just before the hour mark. Scott Allardice lost the ball in his own box after trying to play out and the away side were on to it, Brad Lyon’s deflected effort was flicked on by Scott Robinson into the path of Shaw and he sliced his effort wide.
The opener did come after 69 minutes on the clock, Scott Allardice won the ball in the middle of the park and advanced before picking out his captain. Welsh then took a few touches and unleashed a stunning strike past Zach Hemmings from 25 yards out for his fourth goal of the season.
Kilmarnock didn’t threaten in the closing exchanges and the game finished 1-0 to the home side, with Inverness returning to the top of the Championship ahead of the other weekend’s fixtures.
