The 2019/2020 Scottish Football Season has officially finished after the SPFL board held a meeting on Monday morning to discuss a solution after the coronavirus outbreak brought the season to a halt at the end of March. With France, Belgium and Holland already cancelling their league seasons, the SPFL board have decided to crown current leaders Celtic as champions, relegating Hearts to the Championship.
Neil Lennon’s side were 13 points ahead of their city rivals Rangers and were very much on course to another league title before play was stopped. However, this comes as bad news to Hearts who have subsequently been relegated to the second tier for the second time in six years. Last month, the other three divisions in Scotland were finished after a vote to end the season passed all members successfully. This resulted in promotion for Dundee United, Raith Rovers and Cove Rangers as well as confirming relegation for Partick Thistle & Stranraer.
The SFA remain hopeful of bringing the Scottish Cup to a conclusion once safe to do so with the competition at the semi-final stage. Hearts, Hibernian, Celtic and Aberdeen are the last four teams remaining, however it is unknown when or if this competition will be completed.
