Callachan Secures Pivotal Ross County Win

Ross Callachan nets against former club after Reghan Charles-Cook’s early opener.

Ross Callachan’s second half strike secured all three points for Ross County as they defeated St Johnstone at McDairmid Park on Wednesday night. Callachan sealed a vital 2-1 away win for Malkay Mackay’s side as they moved further away from the bottom of the Scottish Premiership, now two points clear of Dundee and four clear of St Johnstone.

Reghan Charles-Cook gave County an early lead. Joseph Hungbo played played Charles-Cook into the left channel and the wide man’s attempt was dinked over Elliott Parish and rolled into an empty net. The lead however, which only lasted four minutes, was quickly cancelled out by Jacob Butterfield’s deflected strike.

Callachan did have chances in the first half most notably a penalty kick which came just before the half hour mark. The midfielder sent Parish the wrong way but sent his strike off the outside of the post as the score remained even.

Although, the home side made the brighter start in the second period, the visitors did regain the lead through Callachan who made up for his missed penalty in the first half. Charles Cook did the hard work, getting a cross in from the bye-line which Jordan White headed against the inside of the far post. The rebound fell invitingly for the former Saints man, Callachan who smashed the ball home from six yards.

This was Ross County’s first win in Perth since September of last year and Malkay Mackay’s side now move into tenth position, just a single point behind St Mirren in ninth. Next up they face Hearts at Tynecastle on Sunday.
