Albion Rovers manager Brian Reid led his team into Scottish Cup action this afternoon as they made the short trip to Airdrie to face Glasgow University at the Penny Cars Stadium. Having been forced into a replay at this stage last season when they faced Brora Rangers, the visiting side were hoping to prevail first time around this year.
Glasgow University were no pushover and started the strongest of the two sides with several shots on target and narrow misses, most notably from Jonathon Baxter. The visitors did find a breakthrough twenty minutes in when Charlie Reilly slid a neat pass through to Calum Wilson who rattled the ball past the home keeper to open the scoring. However, Glasgow did eventually find an equaliser four minutes into the second period through Cameron Murray.
The game was forced into extra time after both teams could not be separated with the score poised at 1-1. The remaining thirty minutes proved to show the quality between both sides with Rovers scoring on three occasions firstly through Charlie Reilly, who netted his second of the afternoon from the penalty spot. Substitute Amaury Testa got the third of the afternoon on 106th minute before a convincing extra time victory was sealed with an own goal to put Reid’s men into the Scottish Cup Third Round where the face Stirling University.
Speaking after the Cup victory manager Brian Reid was pleased his team progressed.
“We are pleased to be through that’s all that matters in cup games. It was a frustrating game for us, we conceded a lot of chances, but we need to be a bit more clinical in that final third and put teams to bed when we’ve got the chance. Glasgow were well organised and made it difficult for us, we were hoping for a clean sheet and a couple of goals, but it wasn’t to be.
“We got there in the end so fair play to the boys, we seen it to the end, we won convincingly and we’re into the next round which is all that matters.”
