Lee Ashcroft netted the winner at Dens Park tonight which took Dundee ahead of Dunfermline and into third in the Scottish Championship.

After a very poor start conceding twice in 6 minutes, Dundee fought back in style to win a thrilling match against Dunfermline Athletic on Saturday night.

Before the match had even settled James McPake’s men found themselves with a mountain to climb. The away side came flying out the traps and were 2-0 up inside 6 minutes thanks to goals from Kevin O’Hara and Craig Wighton.

Shortly after the Dark Blues did start to find their feet and should have pulled a goal back just before the half hour mark when Ashcroft headed powerfully past the post from five yards out.

As the home side started to take control, they threw everything at Dunfermline in the latter stages of the first half. Max Anderson’s shot was blocked, and Ashcroft headed wide again from close range after Paul McGowan had twisted and turned on the left wing before firing his cross into the near post.

Dundee did eventually get the leveller through Jason Cummings. Anderson’s shot from 25 yards out deflected into the path of Osman Sow however Cummings kept on the move and after two great saves from Fon Williams, the Dundee forward was there to head in from a yard out.

James McPake’s half time team talk seemed to work as the home side came out at blistering pace and put Dunfermline under continuous pressure. It wasn’t long before the dark blues were level as substitute Danny Mullen was on hand to batter home the rebound from Ashcroft’s header which was saved well by Owain Fon Williams, to make it 2-2.

Dunfermline were stunned as two minutes later the home side took the lead. This time McGowan took the corner from the left and Ashcroft scored from 10 yards out with a great header to make it 3 goals in 2 games but most importantly to hand Dundee all three points and take them up to third in the Scottish Championship.

Dundee next face St Johnstone at Dens Park on Saturday 3rd April in the Scottish Cup Third Round. Kick off is at 3pm.
